Forget EGOS – our fav celebs these days are driven by ECO! It’s not about red carpet malfunctions for these superstars, more about saving the planet and fellow human beings - we salute that! Check out our guide for our picks of Hollywood’s ECO-driven celebs…
Rachel McAdams
You’ll know her from The Notebook (awww!) and Wedding Crashers (hilarious!), but you may not know that Rachel’s also a greenie at heart. So much so, she’s got her own blog, ‘green is sexy’, where her and her mates aim to help you ladies stay informed on all things eco with a philosophy of tiny changes making a big impact. A long-time greenie, Rach also bikes everywhere and has switched her house to green power. Leonardo DiCaprio You may be surprised to know that when you type in www.leonardodicaprio.org you won’t find a fan site full of topless pictures, instead you’ll find an eco-aware website set up by Leo to raise awareness about environmental issues. However, if you’ve seen his doco The 11th Hour (written, narrated and produced by Leo) you may not be that surprised. One of the campaigns he’s currently promoting is the global movement to eliminate the use of plastic bags! Daryl Hannah When Daryl Hannah’s not kicking ass as Kill Bill’s one-eyed assassin Elle Driver, she’s kicking the ass of environment baddies! Her weekly video blog DH Love Life covers a range of sustainable issues that she’s keen to tell the world about – this month it’s all about the power of worm poo! Practising what she preaches, her home’s made from green materials and runs on solar power and her car runs on biodiesel! Edward Norton Edward Norton’s rough and tumble Fight Club character is a far cry from his warm fuzzy image as the founder of the BP Solar Neighbours Program. When Ed hooked his own home up with solar heating, he realised that using the sun’s natural heat to power homes would be perfect for poverty-stricken households who couldn’t afford traditional electricity. So he called up BP and proposed a plan – for every celebrity who purchases a BP Solar Home Solution, BP donates a solar system to a low-income family in southern California. Natalie Portman.jpg) Natalie’s always been a bit different from the usual Hollywood superstar stereotype – instead of flashing her panties, she spent her early twenties studying at Harvard. This point of difference shines through even these days - in between blockbusters, she’s out there saving the world and making a difference! A big fan of saving the rainforest, recycling, using energy efficient lighting and empowering women in the third world, Natalie is also a long time vegetarian. She has recently partnered with Te Casan to design her own cruelty-free vegan show line with 100% of profits headed towards an eco-organisation! Colin Firth
Ah, but you always knew Mr Darcy would be the fair type didn’t you?! For the past six years, actor Colin Firth has been involved with Oxfam’s Make Trade Fair campaign working to support the coffee growers of the world – travelling to see their plight in Ethiopia and lobbying the head of the World Trade Organisation. He’s also top dog of fair-trade coffee bars Café Progresso and also ecological destination store Eco While you may not be able to use your star power to create a show-stopping idea like these guys, remember the philosophy of Rachel McAdams – it’s about everyone making their own small changes to make a big impact!
