Digital Camera Roadtest: Samsung L100

What makes a good digital camera these days? Do you want one crammed with features you’ll pay for and never use? Or do you just want a standard point and shoot? How much optical zoom is enough? What the heck’s a megapixel?

I set the benchmark pretty high when it comes to technology – I want it to be able perform like a dancing monkey, but also be simple enough for me to figure out intuitively without having to spend hours schooling up on a chunky manual!

And, once it's checked off the technological boxes, what I want to know is can I take the photos I want? Does it capture those moments with the girls? Can I get a panoramic shot of the exotic landscape I'm checking out? Can I take a cheesy self portrait? What about those attention to detail, up close and personal macro shots?

How does the Samsung L100, a sassy little piece of techno-savviness perform? The phrase, good things come in small packages comes to mind…

The basic rundown: Samsung L100 – Style Slimmed to Perfection

Design

  • Metallic Colour Ways: Pink, Blue, Red, Silver, Black
  • Aluminium, lightweight, durable exterior
  • Size: 20mm slim design
  • LCD Screen: 2.5” Intelligent Screen (adjusts to the lighting conditions)

Technology

  • Mega Pixels: 8.2, enough detail to prints clear pictures to larger than A2 size
  • Optical Zoom: 3x Mounted Inner Zoom, allows for high detailed cropping
  • Anti-Shake Technology: Digital Image Stabilisation for crisp, clear pictures
  • Portrait Feature: Face Detection Tracking for up to nine faces in focus
  • Contrast Correction: Auto Contrast Balance feature to correct light imbalance
  • Images: Still and Moving MPEG-4
  • Image Editing Capabilities: Change colour wash before or after shooting, crop, rotate etc

Special Features

  • Automatic Red Eye Fix
  • Advanced Movie Mode
  • Self Portrait Mode (beeps to let you know when the image has detected a face)
  • Samsung for Techno-phobes: Function Description and Photo Guide modes

Tee's Thoughts:
The Samsung L100 is a great option for an nzgirl on the hunt for a reliable point and shoot camera that they can capture memorable moments on. It’s packed with the latest features and some more unusual ones as well.

The features such as Digitial Image Stabilisation and Face Detection tracking mean that when you’re taking a shot, it has a better chance of succeeding, while post-picture effects such as the Automatic Red Eye Fix and other image editing capabilities mean that you can manage your photo library on the move. The L100 also recognizes that half the fun of taking pictures is sharing – so has an in built slideshow option to show off your snaps!

Using the camera is pretty straightforward and intuitive, but if you’re not a natural to cameras, you’ll be stoked to find the Function Description and Photo Help Guide features to help take the guess work out of your L100, giving you the ‘guided tour’ complete with some expert tips!

The different settings made for great shots, from macro detail to landscapes, and self portraits to group shots. Now all I need is to find some exotic locations to really put the L100 through its paces...
