So are we supposed to be choosing eco sound fabrics? Where on earth do you start? And why would you bother going the extra mile to buy your dress in bamboo or tencel?! Anya has the low-down on the eco chic fabrics with her favourite buys! BambooWhat is it? It can be anything from soft jersey type fabrics to silky, slinky evening wear! For a fabric made out of an incredibly hard woody plant, Bamboo is also naturally anti microbial, making it a great choice for intimate wear like underwear, baby's clothing and sports wear. It naturally wicks away moisture like polyester sports blends do, but fantastically you can wash it in the washing machine and not worry about pilling or pulling. Good for the environment how? Most Bamboo is 100% biodegradable which means it will complete degrade over time in landfills. And of course Bamboo is a renewable resource, with bamboo taking only a short time to grow! Our pick: 100% Bamboo Fabric Slip $28.00 from Bamboo USA Organic Cotton What is it: Pretty much cotton...but organic! Cotton is one of the most versatile fabrics which can be used by itself or blended with other fabrics. A complete summer essential because of its natural ability to breathe – meaning you stay cool and fresh! Good for the environment how? Unlike traditional cotton which is sprayed with countless chemicals, organic cotton is grown without any use of chemicals. This results in no chemical residue in the fabric itself and no extra damage to the environment through pesticide run off. Fair Trade Wool/Cotton What it is: Fair Trade farmed and collected fibres and fabric. Fabric for clothing comes from all around the world but increasingly the raw product comes from smaller countries that would be considered 'struggling' nations. Sometimes the workers in these countries are abused by larger companies, who don’t pay them a fair amount for their product. Good for the environment how? The pay off for fair trade is two fold; through fair trade initiatives farmers are paid a good price for their wool and cotton crops. This money gets fed back into their local community resulting in better futures for everyone. This money can also be invested into more sustainable farming methods meaning that you help the environment directly, and the people that live within it! Our pick: Black Unisex Lounge Pants $31.95 from Fernbird Tencel What it is: A really soft to the touch versatile fabric most commonly in a jersey type form. Tencel is made out of wood pulp, but the fabric which results is soft and pliable to the touch. For those that have touched our super soft empire waist dresses you will know just how soft this fabric is! The best bit is, with all the softness is a great strength making it the perfect choice for day to day basics! Good for the Environment how? Whilst some Tencel is made from specially farmed wood, Tencel fabric can and is increasingly being made out of discarded waste wood pulp. Meaning that we are using a resource that otherwise would have gone to waste! Our pick: nzgirl Princess dress $60.00 from nzgirl Anya Merryfield (76).jpg) |
