These days every company is jumping at the chance to call itself ‘eco-friendly’, ‘green’ or ‘sustainable’.
Although there is a lot of hype out there, you better believe there are some amazing companies who are actually busting their butts to make a positive difference within the world!
We salute some of our fav unsung heroes and give them the kudos they deserve! So the next time you whip out your card or open your wallet, think carefully about what you’re buying and where that money is going…
Starfish
Laurie Foon works hard to run her fashion line, Starfish, in a sustainable and ecologically friendly way. This lady walks the talk, with eco friendly trims, buttons and even belt buckles! Fabric cut offs are recycled off to community groups and all Starfish stores have in house recycle systems to take care of waste. It’s all the little things that make the difference – Starfish even use recycled paper for their swing tags, posters and post cards!
Starfish are serious about their commitment to the environment, and it’s something that has been recognized – last year it scooped the Emerging Sustainable Business Leaders (SME) category at the National Business Awards. And her designs are absolutely gorgeous too!
The mission statement behind this kiwi brand is to ‘create a healthy sustainable world.’ With its line of over 100 sustainable household and personal care products, ecostore work to develop products that are not just good for the planet, but also the user. Malcolm and Melanie Rands established ecostore in 1993, and have since developed Fairground, a charitable organisation funded by ecostore profits to promote ‘on-the-ground’ action.
ecostore now has its own research and development facility, and all products are made in their own ‘certified sustainable’ factory. The brand is hugely successful, and has spread to the US, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong!
The Body Shop have been a long time supporter of animal rights and fairly traded natural ingredients. The first international cosmetics brand to be awarded the Humane Cosmetics Standard for their strong start against animal testing, the Body Shop also has it’s own fair trade programme, Community Trade, which works with 31 suppliers in 24 countries, providing over 15,000 people across the globe with employment.
It also has its own charity, The Body Shop Foundation, which supports pioneering organisations that otherwise would have little hope of conventional funding. We love their five values, Protect the Planet, Support Community Trade, Against Animal Testing , Defend Human Rights and Activate Self Esteem – they are a company that truly do deserve all the kudos they get!

You wouldn’t necessarily think a bank would be a role model for taking a stand in society, but Westpac have established themselves over the past few years as one company who care more about the bottom line. Westpac has a strong holistic approach to sustainability, taking into account both the environmental and social impact of its actions. For five out of the last six years Westpac has been named the number one bank in the world for sustainability by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
Westpac New Zealand supports a number of community groups not only with funding but with enthusiastic staff participation including the Rescue Helicopter Trusts, Sir Peter Blake Trust, Halberg Trust and Building Better Schools and every Westpac employee is entitled to a paid-day-off each year to volunteer with a community or non-profit organisation.
Add to this their drive to increase New Zealanders' financial literacy (through community workshops and online tools) and their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and you’ve got a company who are making the most out of life. Phew! Find out more here
