Decisiveness - one of those annoying things that life tends to throw at you. Let’s face it, decisions are everywhere, even deciding to be decisive requires a decision! How unfair is that?!
But it’s confession time. I am probably one of the most indecisive people you will ever meet. Like so many others, I am the person who spends what feels like a million years in a shop before I buy something.
I am the person at the front of the increasingly long line, who annoys everybody else by taking too long to decide which flavour chewing gum I would like. I am also the person who most likely irritates you by not being decisive enough and therefore, taking up your time.
Apologies aside, I’m glad to inform you that I was (hence the past tense) that person. Until, one day, I realizsd the extreme annoyance this hopefully inherited (easier to shift the blame…) characteristic caused.
So, the real question is, are you indecisive? Do you procrastinate over things, are not sure which way to turn or what to pick? If it’s between cheese or no cheese on your Subway sandwich, do you break into a sweat? Does mustard or mayonnaise send you into a frenzy of ideas?
But in all seriousness, decisions are important. Not only do they shape our lives, but they are also a reflection of ourselves. Decisions influence what careers we get into, hobbies we take up, friends we make and partners we choose. So really we can’t escape!
That niggling question still remains though. How do you make the “right” decisions?
1. Firstly, assess the enormity of the situation. Is this choice going to affect you for five minutes or five years?
2. Listen to what you are really thinking! If you believe what you truly want isn’t going to be of any benefit, then rationalise. Ask yourself why.
3. Lastly, if the decision is an absolute whopper, ask “am I going to be 100% satisfied with the outcome?”
Yet always remember, wrong decisions are easily fixed. Just make another one!
Now you have contemplated all of this, you have most definitely irritated that long line of people waiting behind you in the supermarket. Spearmint or Peppermint?
