About You
Finding a Wedding Photographer

In these days of fast moving image technology, a wedding photographer is pretty much as essential as the celebrant.

Couples in the past have opted to have friends and family take responsibility for the photos – a huge mistake. It may be a fun idea to scatter around throwaway cameras for cheesy and probably drunk memories, but to have lasting professional photos showing your love for one another is much less regrettable at the end of the day.

Every bride’s worst nightmare, after the groom not showing up - has to be dodgy, out of focus, average wedding photos. Most wedding photographers are up to the challenge, or they would soon be out of business, but there are still the few operating businesses that find the pressure of wedding photography overwhelming.

Therefore, choosing a confident, out-spoken and friendly photographer is a sure sign of their success. Your photographer should be someone you can relate to. Someone who can calm your nerves so that you shine in your photos.

Getting to know your photographer is an important part of the wedding planning process. Your first point of contact should be the phone. It would be unfair to ask for quotes in this manner, as wedding photographers generally offer packages tailor made to suit the couple. Therefore when you make a list of possible photographers you may be interested in, give each a call and first check their availability for your wedding date. Then you can set up an interview appointment to meet your photographer and discuss your options.

Ways to source a photographer:
  • Word of mouth – check out a friend's album or two
  • Internet/ Phone directory
  • Use a Wedding Planner
  • Ask your Celebrant for photographers’ names in the area

Meet with a few photographers and be sure to  ask the following:
  • Availability
  • What do they offer? Get a plan of the day
  • Quotes
  • Can they meet your budget?
  • Do they tailor to suit you?
  • How are the photos presented to you?
  • Is there an album option, and does it cost extra?
  • If going for an album look at the selection and consider supplying your own
  • How long until you receive your photos once the job is complete
  • Reprint costs for family and friends

Communication is vital to a good relationship with your photographer if you want to make sure you get exactly what you have paid for. Stay in touch via email and phone.

Ask to see previous work of the photographers. Keep in mind that some studios set up wedding photographs using models and professional lighting to get the perfect shot. Make sure you ask to see real-life wedding photos!

Good luck finding the perfect photographer who can capture the magic of your wedding, he/she is a big part of your day and many couples form a friendship with their photographer, making everything so much more meaningful on that day.
