Welcome to 2009! Whether you're back at work or still on holiday we've got loads of goodies to help keep you feeling the summer love! Click here for a taste of what we've got...
The wily old Chinese philosopher Confucius once said, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
He had a good point…
If you work until you are 65, you will probably spend another 10,000 days - or 80,000 hours - at work. Sound scary? Well it won’t be if you find a job so amazing, calling it ‘work’ will feel dishonest.
Time to Be a SMART Ass… If money were no object, what would you do? When you have your dream job in mind, it’s time to get started with this S.M.A.R.T plan.
It may look corny, but start with this you will have your dream job mapped out in no time…
Specific: Let’s say you want to be a writer. Do you want to write ads, or a novel? Be specific or you’ll find yourself barking up the wrong career tree.
Measurable: Set goals for every month. If you want to be a Psychologist, month one might be ‘Research Psychology’ and month six could be ‘Start Night School’.
Achievable: Need two years to re-train? Give yourself two years – not two months! Set ridiculous goals and you will be left unmotivated, and still sitting where you are today.
Realistic: You will probably struggle to earn millions as the next Madonna if you have a voice like Kermit. Don’t be a pessimist, but do be realistic about your talents.
Time Bound: Set a deadline - and stick to it. Plaster your room with motivational quotes...anything to keep you on track.
Introducing Google: Your New Best Friend! Do you know your dream job - intimately? If not, don’t panic. Luckily, you’re part of the online revolution. You can find almost anything on the Internet, or in a book sold on the Internet. Remember, the more research you do the sooner you can spend your days doing what you love!
And the Internet isn’t the only place you can look – go to trade shows, subscribe to magazines, or talk to people already in the job you covet. Most will be happy to help and a quick chat can give you valuable inside information.
Repeat after Me: ‘They Can Only Say No’… Let’s face it, the best way to learn something is to get involved! Want to be a photographer? Then call your local newspaper and offer to assist a photographer for the day. Work experience is about so much more than just experience. It can open up a world of contacts and who knows - they might even offer you a job. So make that call. They can only say no, but what if they say yes? It Won’t Happen Overnight, But It Will Happen Finally - never give up. It might take a while to get your dream job, but the longer it takes, the more you will appreciate it when you get there. So why not start now? Besides, what else are you going to do for the next 10,000 days?
