About You
Wedding Music

“The Music you choose for your wedding has the power to set the tone and solidify the theme of your nuptials.”

It's a little bit daunting when they put it like that, isn’t it? Wedding music can be the difference between a good wedding and an unforgettable wedding. Never fear, we have you covered. From the ceremony to the reception, we look at some traditional and not-so-traditional options for your day.

The Ceremony
If you have decided on a traditional wedding in a church, there are a few options besides the organ for your ceremonial music. String quartets have become popular not only because they provide a slightly modern twist in a classical environment, but also because they create a great pre and post-wedding ambience.

Having a soloist at any ceremony adds a great dynamic – I once attended a wedding where the bride had a flautist and a classical soloist singing as she made her way down the aisle.

Occasionally, people decide against the traditional “Here Comes The Bride” march for a song that the couple identifies with more, which is a great way to personalise the ceremony.

The Reception
The reception is really a time for the wedding party to relax so don’t be afraid to have fun with the musical line-up. If you keep the soundtrack upbeat and swinging, your guests will love you for it.

When looking to hire a DJ, make sure you check out their play lists and experience. A DJ is a great way to ensure that the songs will be played exactly how everyone knows them and a good DJ will be able to change genres and tempo with the mood of your guests. DJs are also a smart choice if you’re on a tight budget.

Hiring a band is another option, which provides an enticing live element. A friend of the family hired a swing band for their reception, which ended up covering a whole lot of popular songs in a Frank Sinatra-esque fashion. It was a great way to get people to the dance floor. Having said that, bands are slightly more expensive to hire and setting up the equipment to cater for them can be complicated.

Do some research by listening to various wedding compilations and make lists of music you like and of music you definitely do not like. This is a great guide for your band or DJ on the day.

The First Dance
You’ve made it through the ceremony and now it’s time for your first dance. I don’t mean to scare you but this is the ‘Big Cheese’ of wedding dances. El Presidente. The Big Kahuna. This is a dance that you will be telling your grandchildren about. Take your time in finding the right song – talk to different people about their choices and have a look on the Internet for popular choices.

If your big day is fast approaching and you still don’t know, don’t put too much pressure on yourself to decide – listen to music whenever you can and brainstorm with your partner.

Here are some popular options...
'Amazed', Lonestar
'Eternal Flame', The Bangles
'At Last', Etta James
'From This Moment On', Shania Twain
'How Sweet it is to be Loved by You', James Taylor
'Unchained Melody', The Righteous Brothers

If you’re looking for something a little different, here’s some that I came up...
'Cigarettes and Coffee', Otis Redding
'Lady', D’Angelo
'Have I Told You Lately that I Love You', Van Morrison
'Unforgettable', Natalie Cole & Nat King Cole
'Friday I’m in Love', The Cure (If you’re married on a Friday)
'Steppin' Out (Late Night Alumni Slow Dance Mix)', Kaskade

For help with your musical planning, there is a helpful music workbook that can be found here. At the end of the day, it’s your wedding and you shouldn’t compromise on what you want to hear. Be specific about what you want or even what you don’t want and everything else will fall into place.
