Gemma, nzgirl’s editor, has just got engaged, so she’s going to keep you posted as she plans the wedding…
I had a pretty good idea a proposal was coming my way on Saturday May 19. Paul, my boyfriend had (trying to sound casual) suggested we head out for dinner. Normally I’m the one pushing the going out plans, so this was my first sign something was up.
He was acting pretty weird all night. First he rushed me out the door really early (I think we got there just after 6pm), then he kept checking his phone and getting texts the whole time we were eating. After we finished our main, I was keen for dessert, but he suddenly decided we needed to leave. I was a bit confused (and determined to eat something sweet!) so asked to look at the menu anyway, but he was adamant he didn’t want anything and urged me to finish my wine, which I ended up having to scull!
We got in the car and he suddenly decided we did need dessert, so he stopped at a gas station for ice-cream, telling me to wait in the car. We then headed home and when we pulled up in our driveway I noticed there was a ring of candles glimmering under one of the trees in our garden. He led me over there, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I shed a few tears and of course said ‘yes!’. He then told me about what a mission the night had been; he was trying to co-ordinate with his friend who was coming around to light the candles so we’d arrive back just as he left to make sure they didn’t blow out/ burn down the house… which explained all the text messages, erratic behaviour and sudden stops at petrol stations!
It was really special that he’d chosen our garden as the proposal spot – we bought our house together at the start of the year, so it’s nice to have that memory attached to it now! After staring blissfully at my ring for a while it was time to get on the phone and let my family know. My mum was out to dinner for her birthday with all her friends when I called her and I haven’t heard her that happy in a long time! Everyone we’ve told is stoked and excited we’ve finally got around to getting engaged (after seven years together, I guess it was about time!) and I’ve been drifting around in a happy bubble ever since.
I will have to stop wasting so much time staring at my ring with a gooey expression on my face though… it’s not very productive!
We’ve decided we’ll have the wedding in March or April next year, just before we head away on a three month trip we were already planning to Europe (fingers crossed we can afford to do it all at once), so I’m thinking the next 10 months could be a tad on the busy side!
By next month’s update we should have the venue sorted and (knowing me) I’ll have the dress all picked out. I’ll keep you posted on any helpful tips I pick up along the way and let you know how we deal with any wedding related dramas.
I thought I’d leave you with the lovely clip below about the dangers of Bridezillas… I was pretty disappointed when I found out this is a set up, but it’s still pretty funny. I've had to promise the boy I won't do this!
