About You
How to live the life you want

How are you feeling about your life at the moment? Is it trucking along with everything falling into place, just like you’d always planned? Or do you wake up panicked at 3am convinced it’s passing you by?

If you fall into the latter category then it’s time to take charge and sort out what’s not working for you. It’s much better to work that out now, than carrying on ignoring your dissatisfaction till you hit 40. If you don’t like your life - whether it’s how you look, your lack of boyfriend or your crummy job – then it’s YOUR responsibility to do something about, because no one’s going to fix it for you!

But while that’s easy to say, setting goals and making changes in your life can actually be a very overwhelming, scary, not to mention daunting process. Luckily, you have the helpful team at nzgirl to help set you on the right track, with our step by step guide to getting what you want out of your life…

Step One: Decide what you want
Take 10 minutes on your own to ask yourself what you
(not your partner, your parents or your boss) want out of life. If you’re a visual person get a big piece of paper and start jotting down thoughts or drawing pictures. To help you get started think back to when you were a kid. What did you want to do? Children don’t judge whether they can achieve something based on external factors, if they want to do it, they believe they can. Focus purely on your goal and ignore those voices in your head saying “that will never work, you’re not pretty/ smart/ confident enough to do that…” It’s also essential to be specific. There’s no point saying “I want more money” – if someone gives you $1 you’ve achieved your goal! A much better goal is I want $10,00 in six months.

Tip: Finding it hard to suss your goal? Don’t worry, you’ll always know in your heart what you want out of life, it’s just that sometimes your head gets in the way.

Step Two: How will it feel?
It’s all very well to have a lofty goal to work towards, but how will you know when you’ve achieved it? You need to really think about what your goal will look like, sound like and feel like when you reach it. As well as forcing you to think about how you’ll know when you’ve reached your goal, it will also help motivate you. Plus, by tuning into the successful feeling, you’ll be more likely to attract success. For example, if your goal is to fall in love you have to get out of the mindset that once you achieve that goal, then you’ll be a happy, fun person. You need to start being that person now, if you want to fall in love.

Tip: Try faking it to you make it.

Step Three: How will I achieve it?
This is the crucial step. There’s no point formulating a
grand plan if you don’t work out how you’re going to make it a reality. A major goal can look very overwhelming, so the key is to break it down into bite sized pieces, which you then tackle one step at a time. Write yourself a list, so you can have the pleasure of ticking things off it (there’s no better feeling!). Keep your steps small – if your goal is to lose weight your first task would be to hit up Google to find your local gym, the next task would be to give the gym a call and make an appointment to come in. However, as helpful as the list is, don’t get stuck in the mindset that there’s only one way to achieve your goal. Life is always throwing surprises so it’s essential you’re able to be flexible
and adaptable.

Tip: Don’t listen to people who say you can’t reach your goal. Ignore negative people, it’s your life, not theirs!

Final Tips
  • Don’t wait for the perfect man, the perfect weight or the perfect hair day to get started on your goal. If you wait for things to be “right” before you begin, you’ll always be waiting for a tomorrow that never comes.
  • Picture yourself at 80 looking back on your life. What are the things you should have done? Would have done? Could have done?
  • Do what you love. Love what you do. The rest will follow…

Just remember, you can be anything you want in life. But you just have to ask for it!
