So you love to travel… who doesn’t?! But it’s super-expensive, right? It can be, but not if you know where to look. Here are some ways to ensure you get the most bang for your travel buck…
Grab a seat First stop, visit Grabaseat. Air New Zealand’s latest site has fantastic domestic travel deals every day – think Auckland to Christchurch for less than $50! There are also some international deals, including a recent return trip fare from Auckland to LA for $449! For best results, check the site every morning, and be flexible about when you want to travel.
Sign up for Itchyfeet Get on the Itchyfeet email list – sign up on their website. You’ll get regular emails with fantastic travel deals. Whether you’re after a one way ticket to Sydney or a 7-day holiday in Phuket, chances are Itchyfeet will have the best deals.
Free stuff alert If you’re not completely set on a destination (or even if you are but don’t know much about it) check out freetravelbrochures.co.nz – get free brochures for travel just about anywhere in the world. You can search by destination, age group, budget – and you can order as many as you want. A great way to find out about places to go. My personal favourite? Check out the tours by Vodkatrain.
How far can you go? Want to know how far you can go on your budget? Air New Zealand’s got another great addition to their site which you can check out here. You can use it to work out what it will cost you to go as far away as you like. Keep in mind you’ll probably be able to get better deals in most cases if you shop around.
Tour time Head to nz.contiki.com to find out about their tour options. From camping to flash hotels, there are options to suit your budget wherever you want to go in Europe or the USA. If you travel in the European winter, you’ll generally spend less on airfares and Contiki tends to discount their tour prices a little as well.
Reach for the STAs STA Travel’s got great travel deals, especially if you’re a student and/or under 26! Their website has lots of tips, whether you’re after a short break or about to head off on your OE. And the biggest non-website tip? Keep your eye on the fine print and make sure you’re aware of taxes, fees, levies and all other additional (and sometimes unexpected) charges. Talk to friends who’ve been where you’re thinking of going to get a feel for how much time you want to spend there. And seriously consider travel insurance – without it, what seems like a cheap trip may end up being very expensive!
