Wedding Diary 3: The Dress
|
|
I know weddings are all about pledging everlasting love and all that carry on, but let’s be honest here… the dress is one of the most exciting parts!
I was itching to go dress shopping from the day after I got engaged (sad and a wee bit bridezilla-ish I know!) so about a month after that happy occasion my mum, my sister and I hit up some of the bridal shops around town.
I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted. A big poofy, strapless princess dress wasn’t really the look I was after… rather I favoured something more soft, romantic and vintage looking. The problem was I had too clear an idea and for the first few shops I couldn’t find anything I liked enough to try on… especially because 95% of wedding dresses are strapless, a cut I hate with a passion!
However, once we realised the type of straps I wanted could easily be added on, my options opened up a bit more and I got trying. The first dress I tried, complete with veil and accessories, bought a tear to mum’s eye. It was a pretty cool moment, feeling all bridal! Although, word of warning to other future brides… think about your underwear. Your hottest black bra and pants set just isn’t a good looking under a virginal white gown – I can’t believe that hadn’t occurred to me.
By the end of the first day I had a short list of three dresses, none of which were what I thought I wanted. I went to bed that night feeling very confused by these very “wedding-ish” dresses. I felt gorgeous in them, but they were just so big and heavy with all those layers of petticoating and trains and I wanted to be able to move freely and enjoy my day, not feel trapped in a massive dress.
I ended up deciding that the fact I couldn’t decide meant I hadn’t found the right dress yet. This was a good realisation, because when I went out for a second day of shopping the very last dress I tried on instantly gave me the “this is the one” feeling.
It didn’t look like a lot on the rack and I’d only tried it on as an afterthought, but as soon as I got it on I got all tingly and excited. It’s a very light chiffony ivory number that falls softly from under the bust. It came with a brooch, which I’m not keen on, but I’m hoping to change it for one of my late grandmother’s ones, so I have a little piece of her close to me on the day. The dress doesn’t have a train though, so my amazing mother is adding a small one for me and also making chiffon straps to replace the spaghetti straps currently on there.
I haven’t taken any photos of the dress on me and I’ve decided not to show anyone the one I have of the dress on a coathanger as it hasn’t had the changes made to it yet (plus I don’t want my fiancé to see it!). But I promise I’ll post a pic after the wedding (it’s only seven months to go today – I can’t wait).
My advice for other brides out there is to just trust your instincts. You’ll know when you find the right dress because you’ll just feel amazing in it. So if you’ve been out looking and found it quite disheartening don’t give up hope! That dress is out there.
