Welcome to 2009! Whether you're back at work or still on holiday we've got loads of goodies to help keep you feeling the summer love! Click here for a taste of what we've got...
So you’ve decided to enter the wild and wonderful world of studying a degree. It can be daunting when you hear about enrolment forms, pre-requisites, Student Loans, Allowances, living costs and repayments - and you haven’t even decided what you’re going to study yet!
To help you out we’ve put together some of the dos and don’ts of choosing a degree… Don’t follow the crowd It’s not the best idea to study whatever your friends are doing so you can hang out just like the old days. In reality, you may not even still be friends with your school crowd in a few years anyway. Plus you will meet loads of new people at uni who share the same interests as you!
Do talk to a careers advisor There are plenty of careers advisors at high schools and universities who are trained to help lost lambs decide what to do with their lives! They have loads info on all the degrees offered by different universities for you to take away and pour over!
Do think about the past Remember the subjects you took at school and what you enjoyed. Look at degrees which allow you to study things you genuinely like and are good at. You are more likely to do well and stick it out rather than if you study something just because you’re promised lots of money at the end of it.
Don’t leave applying for your Student Allowance or Loan too late Even if you haven’t finalised your study plans for 2008 you can still get your application for a Student Allowance or Loan underway. It’s much better to get in early and, given you can apply online, it’s hardly taxing! Click here to get started right now so even if you can’t decide which papers to pick at least you know the money side of things is taken care of!
Do talk to friends and family Ask people you trust who have studied or are studying what you’re interested in about their experiences. It’s good to find out how they found it to get a better idea of whether it will suit you.
Don’t always listen to friends and family Don’t rely too much on what other people say because in the end you’re going to be the one with the student loan and a million assignments. Think about how different degrees suit your interests and study style, rather than what Aunty Mavis says!
Don’t stress if you have a change of heart You’ve decided you don’t actually don’t want to be a marine biologist anymore. It’s ok - you are one of thousands of students who change their minds, some even in their last year! Talk to your course leader, you may be able to transfer your credits to put towards another degree without having to start from scratch.
Don’t be shallow When considering what degree to do, don’t look at what university is the fanciest or has the coolest student bar. Cheap drinks will mean little if you’re not happy with what you’re studying. Instead choose the degree that sounds most like you regardless of where you’ll be studying. Do go to open nights Most universities hold open nights for each faculty. It pays to go and check out the campus for yourself. It may feel a little geeky having a guided tour, but there will be heaps of other people feeling like you. There are usually current students who are happy to answer any questions you have.
Do what you want When it comes down to it, do something because you want to and not because your sister loved it when she did it. Do what makes you happy - university life is way more fun if you’re enjoying yourself. That’s not to say it’s a bed of roses all the time…
