Getting married isn’t all about the bling. It can be hard not to compare your wedding to another bride’s, but money doesn’t buy you the best day. It’s the special (and completely free) moments that make it into one of a kind.
Most people don’t have a bottomless money supply for their wedding and it’s not a smart idea to start married life in debt, so here are some tips to save you some money while still having the wedding you want. You don’t have to spent thousands to get a one-off and gorgeous dress Instead of paying a designer to make your dress, why not customise one off the rack? Buy a mid-price dress that’s got all the basics right, like colour, material and beading, then go to a dress maker and get them to alter it into the dress of your dreams. That way you get a one-off dress without breaking the bank.
Visit chain-stores to find your bridesmaid’s dresses If you have plenty of time to plan your day, then hit the shops when they’re in sale mode to score a bargain. Make sure you visit Staxs and Principals - they have pretty dresses that can be worn again and they don’t cost the earth (which is great when you’ve got more than one bridesmaid!). If you want to make them a little bit different, get your dressmaker to alter and customise them.
Something borrowed… Did you love your friend’s veil? Ask if you can borrow it - she’ll be flattered you asked. Veils are an item you’re not likely to wear again.
Use ‘second’ roses and flowers on your cake Fresh flowers make your cake stand out but you don’t have to pay top dollar for them. There is minimal difference between first and second grade flowers, and let’s face it, the cake isn't in every photo like your bouquet is.
Instant Kiwis make great wedding favours Scratchies are an innovative and cheap gift for your guests and there’s always the potential that someone will strike it big! Visit your local Lotto store a month before the wedding and see what tickets they’ve got to match your colour scheme - you can’t go wrong with favours only costing $1.
Decorate the venue yourself While this may seem like a huge and unwanted task, it can be a great bonding exercise. Get your wedding party and families together the day before and have some fun! Crank up the music, laugh and stare dreamily into the eyes of your beloved while you set up the perfect place for your nuptials. Just make sure you are organised so it doesn't become a stressful task!
It’s important you don’t skimp on the photographer, the rings or hair and make-up as these last for ever and you don't want to have any regrets.
You don’t have to pay a fortune to get the best, but make sure you are happy with what you’re getting. After it’s all over it will be the special moments shared by you and your new hubby which will keep you smiling for years. You’ll also be stoked to know you’ve got more money to spend on your honeymoon!
