If you have a keen eye for trends, love fashion and have a good grasp of numbers, a job as a buyer could be perfect for you! We chat to Anna, an nzgirl with an exciting career as a Senior Buyer for EziBuy...
Name: Anna O’Brien Job title: EziBuy Senior Buyer - Emerge Salary: Buyers salaries range between $26,00 and $70,000
Can you give us a brief job description? Essentially my job is to provide our customers with quality, up to the minute fashion at great prices. So we travel, research trends happening in the northern hemisphere and then combined with our knowledge of what our customers want, we select styles that we know they’ll love. What inspired you to go into this field? I have always been interested in fashion but truly fell into the industry. When I first started looking for work after university I applied for three jobs and the first one I was offered was with a New Zealand fashion designer. Little did I know at the time how lucky I was, as it provided me with 10 years experience across all facets of the industry before I joined EziBuy as one of their womenswear buyers.
What's a typical day at work like? It varies depending on what time of year it is. Often it is viewing ranges, meeting with suppliers, checking fits and other times it is dealing with numbers, re-orders, costs etc.
Best perks of the job? Being on the high streets, seeing all the latest fashions and all for work!
Most memorable moment since getting your job? Probably when the first catalogue I was involved with was mailed. I was working on the Grace Hill brand and I had just started. Very nerve racking, but it turned out well!
What do you enjoy about your job most of all? It is just so rewarding when a catalogue mails and the stock hits the store, and you watch a style just fly out the door. That means we are doing our jobs well and our customers are loving what we are doing.
What qualifications and previous experience got you the job? As mentioned earlier, I spent 10 years working with a small company, starting as a production assistant and then I was the production manager, learning every aspect of ‘behind the scenes’. I then moved to the design and sales team and provided the link between our customer and the designer. This foundation allowed me to move to a buying role with EziBuy, which requires knowledge of all of those things.
What personality traits/skills/attributes help a person to get a job like yours? You need to be very organised, a good researcher, a good negotiator, strong with numbers and you need to have a good eye for fashion.
Advice for nzgirls wanting to get into your industry? Be patient, gain an understanding of the skills required - for example, fabric knowledge and garment construction, and be willing to learn the commercial side of the business.
